Baba Guru Nanak

Truth is about everything:

But the higher is the living of the truth-Guru Nanak

Baba Guru Nanak, was born during a period of great social, political and spiritual crisis in the history of India. Muslim rule had come to India and the Mughal dynasty was firmly established by Babur. With the new brand of rulers came a new religion, which had created a further social upheaval in a compartmentalized, caste ridden Hindu society. The spiritual doctrine preached by the Hindu priest, was challenged by the new thoughts that came with the Muslims, as well as the exploited amongst the Hindus.

In this period of turmoil, Guru Nanak introduced a new stream of thought. He sought to transform the people's outlook and attitude towards life and society; that the God of Muslimsand the God of the Hindus was one and the same God; that all humans were his children and thus members of the same family. He preached love and regard for each other to live in peace and harmony.

Guru Nanak's challenge to the social turmoil was most profound, as well as the most practical for it laid the foundation to a practical challenge to the Mughal rule in India. His gospel was the germ that ultimately developed into modern Sikhism.

Baba Nanak was born on April 15, 1469 CE., in a place called Talwandi, known after him as Sahib, Nankana district in the divided state of Punjab, now in Pakistan. His parents were Mehta Kalu, his father who was a village record keeper, and Triptan his mother. He had an older sister, Nanaki, who later became his first disciple.

It is said that at thetime of his birth, the wise in the locality heard celestial music; his Muslim midwife Daultan revealed to neighbors that the child laughed as an adult immediately after birth. The family astrologer, Hardyal, on seeing the child, with folded hands, said that he would be worshipped by Hindus and Muslims alike and even the inanimate would utter his name in reverence.

Those who are received in the sanctuary of the gurus, are the ones I know destined from eternity-Guru Nanak

The three fundamental principles preached by Guru Nanak are:

Remember God, remembering God through meditation. Earn Honestly, earning an honest living. Share with Needy, selflessly serving others, sharing income and resources.

In his life time Guru Nanak travelled extensively, preaching thegospel, living the truth, with love and humility. Guru's travels are called Udasis. His closest companion Mardana was, who came from a Muslim family. They traveled together extensively for more than 20 years. Guru Nanak sang hymns he composed in devotion to one God. Mardana accompanied him by playing the Rabab, a stringed instrument.

If man receives bliss only as result of his efforts. What need then is there of God and his Grace?

Effort one must make, but the fruits thereof must be surrendered to God.

Only thus does one's ego depart, and one merits the Grace of God, the realm of spirit also degenerates into a market place of give and take-Guru Nanak
